Dances With the Sun
(Note: inset stanzas are meant to be sung.)
From a hollow of tangled brush deep in the untouched wilderlands
a vixen child is born, just as the sun dons birth to the light.
Through the pink lids of her tightly closed newborn eyes
she could feel the affectionate warmth of her glowing mother.
For the first time she stretched her young limbs,
for the first time she felt the warm winds
nestling their gentle hands upon her cheek,
and for the first time she heard the song of her mother sun.
The wind and you as one
The sun, I am your mother
The morning is for dancing
Sing and dance forever
The gracious melody sweetened her like a mother’s milk.
It filled every pore, every nook, every inch of her heart.
As the amber vixen grew, she carried with her this song
and partook each day in a ceremony to embrace it.
Every morning the amber vixen rose with the shining sun.
Her eyes beamed as they surmounted its blushing rays.
With perfect agility she sprung to her feet
and stretched her nimble limbs, releasing Morning’s yawn.
Quickly she dashed from her homely dwelling,
speeding atop the land as a ground-born eagle.
Rising near her destination, again she smiled.
With powerful paws and shining eyes, she leapt into the air.
A ballet of breezes tickled her velvet fur
and her powerful nose drew the scent of the day.
Her wind-flattened ears basked in the mist of the morning melodies
and her awestruck eyes absorbed the painted landscape.
Her paws touched down atop a cliff, facing the sun on yonder horizon.
Now she smiled and began her delicate dance.
The wind and I as one
The sun, she is my mother
The morning is for dancing
Sing and dance forever
Atop the cliff she danced, singing her words without a voice.
Perfect movements and the will of the wind became her composition.
I embrace my dancing spirit
I sing with graceful fervor
The morning is for dancing
Sing and dance forever
The vixen danced until her shadow fell,
too tired to mimic its master’s symphony.
So the vixen too laid down her paws
and caressed the earth with her gentle tail.
The song played on inside her mind,
through sleeps, and hunts, and rising moons.
Every morning she would dance until her shadow fell,
‘til streaks of gray broke in her amber hair.
One shining morning as the vixen rose,
she spun ‘round and gasped as she saw her sleeping body.
Saddened with Death’s leaden tear, she bowed her head in remorse
and watched as the sun broke the leaves onto her spiritless body.
She knew her delicate paws would never dance again,
and with heavy regret, she made her way to the familiar cliffscape.
The new dawning sun watched her with expectant eyes,
and impulsively, the vixen’s spirit began to dance again.
The wind and I as one
The sun, she is my mother
The morning is for dancing
Sing and dance forever
I embrace my dancing spirit
I sing with graceful fervor
The morning is for dancing
Sing and dance forever
Now the vixen’s ultimate wish was to be fulfilled.
What she thought to be a loss became endless gain.
The wind entwined itself in her dancing spirit
and she melted into its arms, now to dance forever.
If ever you should venture to the painted cliffs
where the amber vixen once embraced the flowing winds
and you feel a brush of velvet fur against you,
that is the eternal spirit of the vixen as she dances with the sun.

where did you get your inspiration, might i ask? how did you know exactly how and what to say (the lines "The vixen danced until her shadow fell, / too tired to mimic its master’s symphony. / So the vixen too laid down her paws / and caressed the earth with her gentle tail." comes into mind especially)?

My inspiration came from a few different branches for this one. When I wrote this I was out on a camping trip, and at the time was pretty much being left alone in a cabin. So I guess the initial inspiration was the natural environment. As for the theme, I remembered this image I saw long ago. I can't recall the artist, but it was a picture of a dancing fox, or vixen as it were. For some reason that image stuck with me, and was recalled back to my mind when I was writing this poem. The lines came to me very easily, this was one of the few poems I've written that I didn't revise more than once. The words just kindof flowed into my head. I did, however, originally write this in 2 seperate sections. Originally, the poem began with the line "Every morning the amber vixen rose with the shining sun." in the 5th stanza. But then I later got to thinking, if I'm ending this poem with death, I should begin it with life. And thus, I wrote the additional four stanzas explaining the birth of the vixen, and placed them at the beginning of the poem. The whole poem can be divided up into phases of birth, life, and death, thus a cycle. The birth is from the beginning of the poem until "With powerful paws and shining eyes, she leapt into the air." then life from that point until "'til steaks of gray broke in her amber hair.", and then death thereafter. The best way to get things to sound just how you want, is to consider all the different ways to say what you're trying to say. Also, hug a thesaurus, he's your best friend.
